Service Description: Legal Aid Ontario lawyers who assist people without a lawyer in court

Duty counsels provide assistance with:
  • advice about legal rights, obligations and court process
  • help during courtroom proceedings - adjournments, bail hearings, entering guilty pleas, submissions at sentencing hearing
  • Crown pre-trial/resolution meeting
  • referring to other legal aid services

Duty counsels do not take cases on an ongoing basis, and people may speak to different duty counsels over time
